On May 7, the university held another roundtable meeting to consider the new challenges facing our country, and on a more local scale, the scientific community involved in the implementation of the project “Healthy Nutrition from Childhood to Longevity”.

The organizers, ideological inspirers and moderators of the meeting – Vice-Rector for Scientific Work of the NUCT Serhiy Tokarchuk and Head of the Kyiv Scientific and Technical Society of the Food Industry Yuriy Zadnipryany – addressed the attendees with welcoming words. They noted that within the framework of the implementation of this project, the issue of developing new food products for cancer patients, that is, products for special medical purposes, is being raised for the first time.

Therefore, it is quite logical that the meeting was attended by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the National Cancer Institute, Head of the Scientific and Clinical Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Ivan Lisnyi with a report “Modern view on the development and negative impact of nutritional deficiency in cancer patients, prehabilitation of cancer patients, application of the ERAS strategy in oncology surgery” and a graduate of the Department of Health Products Technology of our university, currently a nutritionist at the National Cancer Institute Olga Akinshina with a report “Nutritional therapy at the stages of treatment of cancer patients”.

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the P.L. Shupyk National Institute of Health and Care of Ukraine Galyna Anokhina joined the round table online with an extremely informative report “Nutrition in the prevention and treatment of cancer patients”.

The organization of nutrition for cancer patients in medical institutions, with a description of the requirements, shortcomings and necessary changes, was discussed in the speech of Maria Gulich, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the State Institution “Institute of Public Catering named after O.M. Marzeev”.

Our university was presented by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Health Products Technology Galyna Simakhina with the report “Nutrition as an Important Component of Complex Therapy”. She noted that this is a rather specific problem that requires new approaches and new results of evidence-based medicine in order to create food products for cancer patients, since such nutrition should be diverse at certain stages of prevention and treatment of patients. In particular, nutrition for the prevention of cancer; nutrition during radiation and chemotherapy to reduce the severity of negative side effects; nutrition in the pre- and postoperative period; specialized nutrition to prevent nutritional deficiency and depletion of the body; nutrition during the rehabilitation period and during remission, etc.

A wonderful presentation of functional dairy products was held by Raisa Mikhailova, the general director of LLC “Firm “FAVOR”, and it was logically continued by the co-author of most of the products Lyudmila Osinnia – the head of the information and analytical department of NV LLC “Zhytomyrbioproduct”, a general practitioner, a nutritionist.

The leading idea of all the speeches was the thesis: what we do is relevant at all times, because we work for the highest value on earth – human health. We are confident that only a comprehensive approach to solving this problem, taking into account all the possibilities of medicine, modern food technologies, and in-depth study of the cause-and-effect relationship between nutrition and health, can give a truly effective and long-term result in the prevention and treatment of many diseases, especially alimentary ones.

The problem of developing special food rations for the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases became such an urgent issue of the current round table. This is a particularly vulnerable category of diseases in itself, and it is very painfully perceived by those who have fallen into it. At the present time, when a full-scale war has affected almost every Ukrainian, each of us lives at the limit of our physiological and psychological capabilities. And for people with oncology, this situation has critically complicated their lives, because it clearly requires even more strength to fight the disease, greater energy expenditure than in peacetime, and where to get them?

At the end of the meeting, a general resolution was adopted, one of the points of which states: it is very important that, in accordance with the needs of today, we create such interactive platforms where representatives of different areas of science can share their experience, their methods and practical recommendations on how to help cancer patients – both from the point of view of purely medical practices and from the point of view of healthy nutrition, find something new and significant for maintaining the mental and physical health of this category of patients, and identify promising areas for further activity.
